The College Community Connection Ministry, a nonprofit organization in Orange
County, North Carolina, partners with local colleges and universities to serve students
who desire to attend a Saturday academic enrichment program. Students who participate
in the Saturday Academy take courses for advancement or do remedial work in a particular
area of study. Areas of concentration include reading, English, mathematics, and
computing. The program assists students in pre-K through 12. The teaching staff
consists of college students from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill,
Duke University, and North Carolina Central University. This project has already
been implemented. Students from Bennett College participated in the program during
the initial development phase. The first classes were held at Mt. Sinai Missionary
Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina. The Orange County Schools Board has pledged
its support, and, in the coming year, classes will convene at the A. L. Stanback
Middle School in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
