Community Service Project
Learn Music, Play Music is an extension of music enrichment programs started last year at Foust Elementary School and Napoleon B. Smith Academy, a private, church-affiliated school, both located in Greensboro. The enthusiasm of the youngsters showed their thirst to continue learning more music. At Foust, the project will engage youngsters in kindergarten through fifth grades in singing, listening, and movement. These activities will teach musical concepts such as dynamics, pitch and timbre. Upper elementary students will be introduced to the recorder, which serves as a preview of other instruments. Fourth through eighth graders at the Academy, who are interested in learning to play an instrument, will be taught to read music as they study the recorder. Demonstrations of various musical instruments will help the children decide which they want to study. Bennett College music majors will give the music lessons, gaining valuable field experience and some nominal compensation.
