Broad Creek Renaissance Youth Cultural Center
Project developed by: LAVERNE ALEXANDER
Location: Washington, DC
Broad Creek Renaissance Youth Cultural Center is an innovative public/private partnership between the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA) in Norfolk, Virginia, and the local YMCA. The plan is to develop and administer a performing arts-oriented youth development initiative for the 656 young people, ages 7 to 14, residing in two severely distressed Norfolk public housing communities. This initiative is an integral component of Norfolk’s HOPE VI/Broad Creek Renaissance, a comprehensive human and community development strategy to physically redevelop the two public housing communities and enhance the lives of the community’s 767 households. The project will promote leadership, personal growth, self-esteem, academic enrichment, and social development. Beginning as a summer program, the project will continue as an after-school and weekend program.
