One Step Further

Project developed by: GERTHA S. BALEM
Location: Greensboro, North Carolina

One Step Further helps youngsters recover from nonviolent encounters with society and gives them a chance to turn their lives around before it?s too late. There is a challenge in the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina (Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem) to reduce the rising number of youth incarcerated for nonviolent crimes and to build self-esteem in these teens to help them become productive, contributing citizens. A model alternative sentencing program already exists in our community. It is the One Step Further program in Greensboro. One Step Further offers quality, cost-effective mediation as a method of conflict resolution, victim-offender restitution, and public education and training for arbitration. These alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent juvenile offenders save the cost of costly litigation and lengthy incarceration for first-time offenders. Establishing a satellite office of the One Step Further program in High Point will have a positive impact on the people and community.
