Foundation in Phonics and Reading
Project developed by: RHONDA M. DAVIDSON-WHITE
Location: Marshall, Michigan
Foundation in phonics and reading to elementary school students in kindergarten through second grade to aid in their educational success. In partnership with Inkster Public Schools, the project will identify students at Baylor-Woodson Elementary School who have been retained, who have poor attendance, or who have no formal supervision from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is anticipated that 70 or more students will participate. Program components include tutoring, reading, assistance with homework, and recreation. Local high school and college students (Eastern Michigan University, the University of Michigan, and Madonna College) will serve as volunteer tutors. Another source of student support is the America Reads Program. The college students will mentor the high school students. In cooperation with their employers, parents can receive Work Service Credit through the Family Independence Agency.
