The College Community Connection Ministry

Project developed by: LILLIAN S. WILLIAMS
Location: Albany, New York

Women and Girls United for Empowerment is designed to address the poverty and social isolation of women and girls in the inner city communities of Albany, New York. The objectives of this intergenerational project are to boost the self-esteem of participants and to teach them economic skills that will enhance their quality of life. Collaborating with the SUNY-Albany, the project will bring together girls and women from the impoverished Arbor Hill and South End communities. The women in these communities possess skills, such as sewing, cleaning and cooking, that they can transfer to the younger women and also use as tools for economic development. In turn, the older women will mentor the girls and teach them life skills. The girls will learn enhanced computer skills and teach those skills to the older women. The successful economic development model used by indigenous women in South Africa, who have been at the forefront of grassroots development in that country, has strongly influenced the overall philosophy and design of the project.
