SMART Girls Aim For The Mountaintop

Project developed by: CELESTINE ALLEN
Location: Bloomington, Illinois
SMART Girls Aim For The Mountaintop attempts to improve the quality of life for the under 18 year olds, especially the ten percent below the poverty line, in McLean County. SmartGirls will enhance an existing program, Skills Mastery and Resistance Training, that is operated out of the Boys and Girls Club of Bloomington-Normal. The curriculum was developed by Bristol-Meyers Squibb in conjunction with Boys and Girls Club of America. The program imbues young girls between the ages of 10 to 14 with self-confidence and helps them to develop healthy attitudes and lifestyles. Smart Girls will be enriched with the following activities: team-building exercises at an Easter Seals camp, several drama workshops and tree plantings in a local park in the fall, with a follow-up on the progress of the trees in the spring.
