5 Smooth Stones

Project developed by: STEPHANIE J. FISHER
Location: Grand Chain, Illinois

5 Smooth Stones: Defense Against A Silent Giant will make people in southern Illinois aware of sarcoidosis, a chronic disease that affects multiple systems in the body. Although the disease is found throughout the world, in all races and both sexes, it is more prevalent in young women of African descent and in people of Scandinavian, German, Irish, and Puerto Rican origins. This project will heighten awareness of the disease, which is often misdiagnosed. Armed with information, persons with symptoms of sarcoidosis will be able to explore tests and treatment options with their physicians. The five smooth stones refer to the following components of the project: (1) disseminating information; (2) promoting services to encourage early detection; (3) developing personal support groups; (4) informing health care givers of the need for early detection and treatment, and (5) making researchers aware of the need for clinical studies.
