Bridges to Computers
Project developed by: KAREN J. NELSON
Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Bridges to Computers will help narrow the digital divide between African American and majority youth. Using the 25 computers at the Greater Mount Sinai Cogic church, the project will offer age-appropriate computer skills building workshops for two age groups: those 6-12 and 13-18. For example, the sessions for younger ages will focus on enhancing their academic performance, especially in the basis skills areas. Workshop facilitators will assist the high school students to research information about college and university admission, apply on line and find available scholarships. To ensure that the curriculum is age appropriate and in line with the public schools, the project will work closely with the curriculum specialists at the Milwaukee Public Schools. Not only does the project hope to improve students’ computer literacy, it will also measure success by increased school attendance and college enrollment.
