Community Collaborations

Project developed by: JOANNE TORAN
Location: New York, New York

Community Collaborations in Healthcare confronts the racial and ethnic disparities in health care provided people of color due to stereotyping and biases. Working with newly trained healthcare providers from divergent disciplines including social workers, emergency department residents, and clinician research fellows, the project will seek to educate providers as to the importance of viable community-based partnerships as a means of improving health care. The aim is twofold: to improve relationships between health providers, and to foster positive health outcomes and improve the quality of care. There are two components: classroom presentations/discussions and a conference. The content of the classroom component will include sessions on self-awareness, culture, attitudes, knowledge and skills of both providers and minority communities. The half-day conference in the second year will provide an opportunity to share information and exchange ideas. Partners in the project are the Division of General Pediatrics at Mt. Sinai, Mt. Sinai Emergency Department Residency Fellows, Columbia University School of Social Work and the East Harlem Pediatric Subcommittee.
